Just a Silly/Stupid Conservative Response to MisterE

Okay, I’m actually excited because I’ve found another Where I Stand blogger who I totally disagree with! Let the games begin. It’s 1:15 a.m. and I am exhausted, but this needs to be hashed out. If anyone caught MisterE’s most recent column, "You Have to be Consistent," you need to keep reading. Total and utter misinformation.  Yes, STD rates and such are much lower in Europe, but abortion rates are through the roof!  The Guttmacher Institute issued a report on the subject back in 1999.  Here’s one quote:

"Among the developed countries, [abortion] rates are highest in Eastern and Central Europe and the successor states to the Soviet Union."

and another…

"The abortion rate is highest in Europe (48 per 1,000 women aged 15–44), which includes both the subregion with the highest rate (Eastern Europe, with a rate of 90 per 1,000) and the subregion with the lowest rate (Western Europe, with a rate of 11 per 1,000)."

But don’t take my word for it.  Okay, so Western Europe I’ll give you, but that’s it.

And why does Europe have to be "culturally superior?"  Why can’t different peoples simply have different senses of culture?  I’m not endorsing American culture as the end all, be all, but come on.  MisterE maintains that European superiority is what divides sexual issues encountered in the U.S. from those found in Europe, but that statistics don’t necessarily corroborate his point.

Basically, liberalism, he says, is directly linked to "social improvement." Right, so the liberalism presented in American entertainment and media — are those advanced images also working to help alleviate sexual issues among young people?  Uh, no.  Liberalism in America probably contributes — at least in terms of entertainment and media, to sexual problems — and drug problems…and…the list goes on.

Should I be surprised at the fact that ultra-conservative New York State has the highest abortion rate among all states?!  No, because liberalism drives the state — well the NYC portion at least.  Educating young people about sex isn’t "liberal," it’s sensible.  And you were right about a few things.  A lower abortion rate, as you cited, is a good sign.  The very (liberal) NYC is not equip this, however.

And while I truly agree with you on how wrong harming anyone (whether they be gay, a Christian, a Muslim, etc.) is, aren’t you being a bit bigoted yourself?  I don’t know MisterE, I’m just a stupid conservative, but I do believe that middle ground can and must be found.
